Creamy Affogato with Chocolate Chunks and Liqueur

My rich and creamy affogato puts a fun twist on an Italian classic. It adds chocolate chunks and liqueur to vanilla ice cream soaked in espresso. This dessert is perfect for dinner parties that go on late into the night.

What You’ll Need to Make it

This dish is super simple. You’ll only need four ingredients:

Ingredients for the affogato
  • Ice Cream – 2-3 scoops of vanilla ice cream
  • Espresso – double shot of espresso (2 fl. oz./60 ml)
  • Chocolate – a handful of chopped chocolate/chocolate chunks (I used a milk chocolate with hazelnuts)
  • Liqueur – 1 shot of a cream liqueur (Baileys Irish Cream, Licor 35 Pastel de Nata, 1 fl.oz./30ml)

Equipment I Use

We go through a lot of coffee in our household, so my trusted De’Longhi espresso machine came in handy for this one!

To get the ice cream into balls, I used a traditional ice cream scoop. And, as pictured below, I used some lovely dessert glasses to serve them in. However, you can easily serve affogato in any heat-resistant glass or even coffee mugs.

Easy Steps to Make it

Step 1 – Chop the chocolate into chunks. You can use a serrated knife, a chef’s knife, a food processor, or even a rolling pin.

Step 2 – Scoop 2-3 scoops of ice cream into your serving dessert glass or mug.

Step 3 – Brew the espresso and pour it over the ice cream.

Step 4 – Add the creamy liqueur and the chocolate chunks. For the liqueur, I used a Licor 35 Pastel de Nata I got in Lisbon, Portugal, so I’m adding a Portuguese touch to this Italian classic. But you can use any creamy liqueur that pairs well with coffee, like Bailey’s Irish cream.

I serve mine in these dainty dessert bowls. You typically eat the ice cream with a spoon, and then can enjoy the creamy espresso-ice cream-liqueur mixture by sipping it like a coffee.

Creamy Affogato with Chocolate Chunks

This is a gloriously rich, boozy, and creamy dessert. You can have this ready in less than five minutes.

It looks and sounds so luxurious, and the liqueur can really add some kick to the dessert. I’d love to know in the comments what cream liqueur and chocolate you used in yours!
