Crispy Fish Burger Recipe
Turn some plain white fish you have at home into a family favorite with my crispy fish burger recipe, and enjoy a piece of breaded fish coated in a tangy dressing with plenty of crunchy, juicy, and creamy texture for good measure.
Crispy Fish Burger Recipe
I’m always looking for ways to bring fish and seafood to the dinner table in a tasty way because they can be intimidating to cook with. This crispy burger goes down a storm at home, and I often make it with basa. With a breaded coating, creamy dressing, and plenty of juiciness and crunch from the toppings, there’s so much to fall in love with here!
Ingredients
To make my crispy fish burger, you’ll first need the following ingredients:
For the Burgers:
- Burger Buns – 2 brioche burger buns
- Fish – 2 white fish fillets (e.g., Basa fillets)
- Flour – 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- Eggs – 1 egg
- Breadcrumbs – 1/2 cup of Panko breadcrumbs
- Salt – 1/2 tsp salt
- Pepper – 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Oil – 1 cup neutral oil (sunflower, vegetable, canola), for frying
For the Burger Dressing:
- Mayonnaise – 1/4 cup mayo
- Mustard – 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
- Capers – 1 tsp
- Dill – 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill
- Spring Onions – 1 scallion/spring onion
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- Pinch of sugar
For the Toppings:
- Lettuce – 4 gem lettuce leaves
- Tomato – 2 thick slices of tomato
Ingredient Notes
Fish – I used Basa fillets as they are thinner, cook faster, and are a good ratio to the bread. But you can use any white fish you like and just adjust the cooking time to the thickness of the fish fillets.
Breadcrumbs – You can use any breadcrumbs, but Panko will taste better.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 – Create the burger dressing by mixing the mayonnaise, mustard, chopped capers, finely chopped dill, chopped spring onion, salt, pepper, and sugar.
Step 2 – Set up the breading station: flour, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to each.
Step 3 – Add a pinch of salt and pepper to the fish and then roll the fillets through the flour, then egg, and finally breadcrumbs.
Step 4 – Set a pan over medium-high heat and add 1 cup of oil to it.
Step 5 – When the oil is hot, add the fish and fry on one side until golden, and then flip and cook on the other side until golden and cooked through. For a fish like the basa pictured here, it only takes about 3 minutes per side. If you’re using thicker fillets, you may have to increase the time and maybe lower the heat to medium so that the outside doesn’t burn while the inside cooks.
Step 6 – Remove the fillets to a wire rack or plate with paper towels on it to absorb the oil.
Step 7 (Optional) – Toast the burgers (face down) in a dry pan over medium heat (about a minute or so). You don’t need any butter or oil if using brioche buns.
Step 8 – Assemble the burgers: toasted bun, crispy fish, a couple tablespoons of the burger dressing, a thick slice of tomato, and a couple of leaves of gem lettuce.
Serving Suggestions
Filling enough in its own right, you could enjoy this fish burger with a side of chunky chips, crispy French fries, or my rosemary salt potatoes recipe.
If you want something a little fresher, maybe consider a salad, like my halloumi and orange salad.
Oh, and a chunky half of creamy avocado never goes amiss, either!
This is such a fun, tasty, and simple way to prepare some white fish for the whole family.
