Ingredients

This cup of creamy sweetness is super easy to make. To get started, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Ingredients for the hot chocolate
  • Milk – 1 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Heavy Cream – 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Chocolate Bar – 1 white chocolate bar (4oz or ~115 grams)
  • Sea Salt Flakes or Kosher Salt – a pinch of sea salt flakes or kosher salt (enhances the sweetness of the chocolate)
  • Vanilla – 1 tsp vanilla
  • Nutmeg – nutmeg (freshly grated, optional for garnishing)
  • Marshmallows, Whipped Cream, and/or other Hot Chocolate Toppings (Optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 – Chop the chocolate bar into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the faster the chocolate melts.

Step 2 – Add the chopped chocolate, milk, cream, vanilla, and pinch of salt to a small pot on the stove over medium-low heat. Stir with a whisk continuously until the chocolate is melted. Do not let the mixture boil or the oils in the chocolate bar can make the mixture split.

Step 3 – Serve in cups with your favorite hot chocolate toppings. We chose mini marshmallows and whipped cream. Grate some fresh nutmeg on top to add a smidge of spice.

I’m telling you now that the first sip is just absolute magic! It’s sweet, creamy, and so smooth, then the nutmeg comes in ever so subtly. This is more than a little bit naughty, but so worth it.

I tried them with marshmallows and whipped cream toppings. I preferred the whipped cream, and my husband couldn’t get enough of the marshmallow toppings!

Have fun with this super simple recipe, and let me know in the comments what toppings you tried it with. Winter and Christmas will never be the same!

Notes

Milk & Cream – You can make this with just milk and no cream. The cream simply makes it creamier, richer, and thicker. You can also substitute heavy cream with half and half or light cream.
