Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 12 portions (for 12 hot dogs or 12 chili cheese baked potatoes)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 can crushed or diced tomatoes 14.1 oz can
  • 1 cup beef broth or water + beef stock cube
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 medium yellow onion brown onion
  • 2 tbsp mild chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika preferably smoked sweet paprika
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp salt plus more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sugar to mellow the acidity of the canned crushed tomatoes.

Instructions

  • To a large pot over medium-high heat, add the oil. Once the oil is shimmering, after about 30 seconds, add the onion and the salt. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until lightly softened.
  • Add the ground beef and sauté, stirring from time to time, until the ground beef is browned (about 6-7 minutes) and the liquid evaporates. Then, add the minced garlic and all the spices (paprika, cumin, chili powder, black pepper). Stir to lightly toast the spices and garlic for 30 seconds.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of sugar (to slightly mellow the acidity of the canned tomatoes).
  • Bring to a simmer and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring from time to time.
  • To make the sauce slightly creamier and a bit smoother, you can take an immersion blender and run it in the chili sauce a few times. Once it's ready, taste it and add more salt if necessary.

Notes

This chili dog sauce recipe makes enough sauce for 12 hot dogs or 12 baked potatoes.
