Hot Dog Chili Sauce for Hot Dogs, Baked Potatoes, and more

This homemade chili dog sauce is great for making chili cheese dogs and chili cheese baked potatoes (both of which are part of the December dinner series).

It’s easy to make, with most of the time going to it simmering in a pot on the stove (about 30 minutes).

Ingredients

To make this chili dog sauce, you need the following:

  • Ground beef – 1 lb (450 grams) ground beef
  • Crushed tomatoes – 1 can crushed or diced tomatoes (14.1 oz or 400 grams)
  • Beef broth – 1 cup beef broth (or 1 cup water + 1 beef stock cube)
  • Garlic – 2 garlic cloves
  • Diced onion – 1 medium yellow onion (brown onion)
  • Chili Powder – 2 tbsp mild chili powder
  • Cumin – 1 tsp ground cumin
  • Paprika – 1 tsp paprika, preferably smoked sweet paprika
  • Oil – 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt – 1 tsp salt, plus more to taste
  • Pepper – 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • Sugar – a pinch of sugar (about 1/2 tsp), to mellow the acidity of the canned crushed tomatoes.

Instructions

Step 1. To a large pot over medium-high heat, add the oil. Once the oil is shimmering, after about 30 seconds, add the onion and the salt. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until lightly softened.

Step 2. Add the ground beef and sauté, stirring from time to time, until the ground beef is browned (about 6-7 minutes) and the liquid evaporates. Then, add the minced garlic and all the spices (paprika, cumin, chili powder, black pepper). Stir to lightly toast the spices and garlic for 30 seconds.

Step 3. Add the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of sugar (to slightly mellow the acidity of the canned tomatoes).

Step 4. Bring to a simmer and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring from time to time.

Step 5. To make the sauce slightly creamier and a bit smoother, you can take an immersion blender and run it in the chili sauce a few times. Once the sauce is ready, taste it and add salt if necessary.

You can use the chili dog sauce in many ways, including in these chili cheese dogs or these chili cheese baked potatoes. You could also make chili cheese fries, chili tots, chili nachos, and chili quesadillas.
