Ingredients

If you want to make my strawberry red wine sangria, you’ll need the following:

Strawberry red wine sangria ingredients on a wooden board.
  • Red Wine – 1 bottle of red wine of 750ml (I used a Spanish Rioja)
  • Strawberries – 2 cups strawberries
  • Orange – 1 orange
  • Lemon – 1 lemon
  • Sugar – 1/4 cup sugar
  • Liqueur – 1/4 cup orange liqueur
  • Ice – optional to serve

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 – Hull the strawberries and chop them. Slice the oranges and the lemons, and then cut the orange and lemon slices into quarters.

Chopped strawberries, oranges, and lemons.

Step 2 – Add the chopped fruit, sugar, and orange liqueur to a pitcher and muddle the fruit with a wooden spoon (or another kitchen tool you have on hand) to release some of the juices from the citrus.

Step 3 – Add the red wine and refrigerate the sangria for at least 2 hours but not longer than 24 hours.

Pro tip: It will get pretty bitter after 24 hours due to the white pith from the citrus.

Taste and adjust the recipe if needed. You can add more orange liqueur if you’d like. You can sweeten it more by adding simple syrup or more sugar and let it sit for a bit longer until the sugar melts. You can serve it with carbonated water if you want to dilute it a bit!

Top Mistakes to Avoid When Making Sangria

  • Don’t let the sangria sit in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours. The white pith from the citrus will make the sangria bitter when it sits in it for over 24 hours.
  • Don’t use a cheap wine, but don’t use a super expensive one, either. Just buy a decent bottle of wine you would drink on its own, but don’t splurge!
  • Not adjusting the recipe to your liking. If you have a sweet tooth, add more sugar. If you don’t like sweet drinks, reduce the sugar amount. If you don’t like orange liqueur, don’t use it. Taste and adjust the recipe to your own palate.

Serving Suggestions

Depending on the season, you may want to serve it with lots of ice to keep it crisp and chilled.

Garnishing your glasses with a lemon or orange slice helps create that ‘cocktail party’ ambiance.

You could optionally add a cinnamon stick or two to the drink. This will infuse the sangria with undertones of cinnamon spice.

What I love about this drink is how cross-seasonal it is. The strawberries and lots of ice make it perfect for the summer, while the use of red wine gives it a more ‘cozy’ feeling for the fall.

I would love to know how this went down at your gathering, so let me know in the comments. Also, be sure to give me other sangria recipes a try, and tell me your favorite flavor combinations.
